UPDATE Lineart: WIP Sword of Silence by SaturnGrl UPDATE Lineart: WIP Sword of Silence by SaturnGrl
****UPDATE****

Still not getting a lot of feedback from the community...so I've been randomly tweaking with the grip design. My BF really liked this version, so I'm updating to see if anyone has any input, suggestions, or critiques.
Please comment to help finalize this design.

Lineart: Updated Senshi Knight Armor
Lineart: Updated Fire and Ice Rapier

What you see before you is the second sword for Saturn Knight. The Silence Sword, AKA The Sword of Saturn. This is actually the first time I've shown this sword. I've had sketches in the past, but it never evolved much until my recent fandom revival of Sailor Moon.

A little Fan-Fic/RP background on this sword: The Sword of Saturn is actually a royal artifact from the Saturn Empire of the Silver Millennium and it was wielded by the crown prince of the planetary kingdom. After the fall of the empire, the royal family was lost, save for the youngest princess (Hotaru) and her only surviving cousin (Sean). The sword was lost for centuries until the ancient blade wound up in the hands of the Senshi Knight's nemesis. After many battles, the sword was recovered and given to Sean, as the blade was now rightfully his as the Knight of Saturn.

This blade is actually the unholy union of 4-5 different kinds of swords that I've researched. I wanted to design a sword that would represent a sort of Sickle or Scythe-like blade that would tie into the mythos behind Saturn. I started with an Ethiopian Shotel which is a double edged sickle-like sword, but it looked too unrefined to be a sword of a prince. I looked to other curved edge swords, and started to alter the design. I looked at swords like the Khopesh, Kopis, Falcata and even the Falx. The whole time I was evolving this blade, there were times I didn't think it would even work and that I was completely insane for creating such a sword design. Maybe I am?

The main purpose of this sword design is fast paced slicing and cutting through your opponents. It is not meant for clashing with other swords or shields. It is basically an executioner's blade on the battlefield, meant to cut through armor, flesh and bone.

The hilt design I tried to keep simple, and still incorporate some details to tie it to Saturn. The Crossguard is actually designed to match the shorter blade from Sailor Saturn's Silence Glaive. Only a few gems decorate it, as it is a sword of royalty. Teardrop gems are rarely seen or used so I thought it was a unique detail for the sword. Sort of a grim reminder of the blood this blade will spill.

The blade is a double edge like I wanted, but to keep to the main sickle theme, the actual "front edge" is the inward curving edge. To emphasize this detail, I designed the hilt grip to curve making this the defined way to hold the sword. About 2/3 of the back edge is sharpened, up to the area where the blade hooks. The hook area is actually left slightly blunt to absorb little impact and help parry other blades while directing their force to slide down the curved edge, away from the wielder.

This is still a WIP. The grip is left blank because I am at an impasse as to what details to put into the grip. There are 2 variations here of a shorter grip and a longer grip. My boyfriend suggested the longer grip, but I thought that would dwarf the blade too much. But I want to get opinions from my friends and fellow artists here as to what I should do with the grip design. I am open to suggestions here, so feel free to comment.

Let me start by saying I like where this is going.

The guard is sharp and looks good. Lines all around are real solid. The Gem stands out for it not being sharp compared to the guard but I'm not entirely sure if I agree with it just yet. Good on the unique factor, a diamond or Round shaped gem would fit better but it would come across as generic, a square shaped one would look out of place. The more I think in these terms the more I come around to it.

The right side of the blade looks to be at too sharp of an angle compared to the rest of the blade, specifically the portion close to the guard. Perhaps go for a more curved S with both the blade and grip. I think it will smooth it out nicely, but would require a longer grip, which is fine if this sword is intended to go through armor as it would require a two handed swing. A Longer grip wont dward it if it's curved too.
What do you think?

Looks more balanced. The different grips makes me think a person can grab it in different ways depending on the need.

It's a really nice design. The curved edge suggests both what appears to be a flame (the flame of destruction?) as well as saturn's silence glave. I think the longer handle looks a bit better then the shorter one, though it does not make such a difference that you need to change it. I like it!

Wow an impressive looking blade, you're very good at designing weapons. Andso much research went into your design. I would go for a shorter grip, if I'm correct in thinking this sword is meant as a secondary to the rapier sword you did earlier. Secondary swords should be smaller than the primary unless they're identical.

Well, it is a short sword by design. I'm just worried that a longer grip will make it look more like a dagger than a sword.
While it is the "secondary" sword that Saturn Knight possesses, this sword is actually more powerful than his rapier.
Saturn Knight prefers his rapier because this was the sword forged by his soul. The rapier is the culmination of everything he inherited from his parents, which is why the rapier is his main weapon.
The Sword of Silence is more like something he inherited like an heirloom.

Then ask yourself this, would he wield both swords at once? And if so would having a longer grip make the Sword of Silence easier or harder to hold with one hand?
